A service to celebrate the life of David Schmitt will be held Thursday, May 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Casper, Wyo., located at the corner of 2nd and Durbin Streets. Schmitt, who was a senior on the University of Wyoming swimming team, died early Saturday morning, May 7 following a tragic accident at War Memorial Stadium on the University of Wyoming campus.
Schmitt was an outstanding student leader and swimmer at UW. He was a team captain for the Cowboys this past season, and served as the President of the UW Athletic Department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) both his junior and senior seasons. He was scheduled to participate in graduation ceremonies at UW on the morning of his death. He was completing his bachelor's degree in geology.
In addition to serving as the SAAC President, he was a member of UW's SAAC throughout his four years at UW, including serving as the Organizational Relations Officer his sophomore year. He was also a representative to the Mountain West Conference's SAAC program and Co-Chaired the Mountain West Region.
As a team captain for the Cowboys, Schmitt helped lead the Pokes to a third-place finish at the 2011 MWC Championships. Individually, he swam to a 14th-place finish in the 200 butterfly. At the 2010 MWC Championships, Schmitt finished in the Top 15 in both the 100 and 200-breaststroke events. He earned Academic All-MWC honors all four years at UW.

Visitation hours will be held Wednesday, May 11 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home and Crematory located at 710 E. Second St. in Casper, Wyo.
Additional information on other memorials to be held or scholarship funds established in David Schmitt's name will be updated as they become available.
The UW Athletics Department will be making bus transportation available to current and former UW student-athletes who wish to attend Thursday's service in Casper, Wyo. That bus service will meet student-athletes at 7:30 a.m. in front of the Rochelle Athletics Center in the UW Athletics Complex and will depart for Casper at 8:00 a.m. For student-athletes wishing to ride the bus to Casper, please contact Molly Moore, Senior Associate Athletics Director, at firstname.lastname@example.org by 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11.
