June 12, 2014

University of Wyoming head swimming and diving coach Tom Johnson announced the addition of Kirk Ermels to the coaching staff Thursday afternoon. Ermels joins the UW program from Mountain West foe Boise State.

"Kirk was a guy I have had on my list and we are fortunate to have him on our staff with his great coaching background and recruiting footprint in the region," Johnson said. "He just brings a great passion to coaching and coaches at a very high level."

In his only season with Boise State he helped lead the Broncos to a MW Championship in 2013. Ermels mentored 17 All-MW selections, as well as six NCAA qualifiers. Boise State produced 11 top-three finishes with one conference champion at the MW Championship.

"It is a great situation to have someone join our staff from the Mountain West. He knows our strengths and weakness and that will make for a great transition," Johnson said.

Before his time at Boise State, Ermels helped launch the swimming and diving program as an assistant coach at UNC Asheville. He helped lead the program with only eight athletes to a ninth-place finish at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Championships. Ermels coached three event finalist and one silver medal winner.

Prior to UNC Asheville, Ermels spent five seasons as the head coach of the Lions Swim team, as well as the head coach in Helena, Mont., at Capital High School and Helena High School. During his time in Montana he was named the Coach of the Year in the state on three occasions. He led Helena to its first state championship in school history in 2011. Between his time in club and high school swimming he guided 18 athletes to state championships. He also earned the title of head coach of the Montana Zones teams twice in his career. Ermels was named the 2013 Helena Education Foundation Distinguished Educator.

"The staff at the University of Wyoming seems like a great fit and I'm so excited to join the program," Ermels said. "There is a great foundation in place and a tremendous opportunity to continue to build a program that will be successful at the conference, national and international levels."

Ermels is a 2003 graduate of Wayne State College (Wayne, Neb.) earning a degree in sport management. While in Nebraska he coached with the Norfolk YMCA for seven years and spent two years at Norfolk Senior High School.
