LARAMIE, Wyo. -
A total of 13 swimmers will represent the University of Wyoming at the 2013 U.S. Open on Tuesday through Saturday in Irvine, Calif. Fans can follow live results of the event by clicking on the link above.
"This is the most qualifiers for this meet we've ever had in our program," Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson said. "We had at least another 11 kids with qualifying times, so we had almost 24 that swam fast enough to get in. To send 13 is a testament to the kids' hard work and the coaches' great recruiting efforts. It shows their commitment to staying in serious swimming shape during the summer. This meet will help us now and down the road. It's a great stepping stone to the NCAA Championships and the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials."
Sophomore Ryan Nelson enters the event as the top-seeded Wyoming swimmer, as he is 19th in the 400 individual medley at 4:26.29. He finished 19th in the event at the World Championship Trials earlier this month and won the event at the L.A. Invitational a few days later. He will swim the 200 fly and 1,500 free this week and is ranked in the top 40 in each event.
Junior Adam Kalms will swim in the most events for Wyoming, as he tackles the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and 200 IM. He is seeded highest in the 100 free at 37th in the field. Kalms could also join Wyoming's 800 free relay and 400 free relay, which are seeded 14th and 17th, respectively.
Senior Jayce Calhoon will compete in the 100 and 200 back, after setting a UW club long-course record in the 100 back at the Western Section Championships in Gresham, Ore., on July 20. He finished seventh at the event with a time of 59.15.
Senior Morgan Hartigan and junior Claudia Carlson also set club long-course records at the Section Championships. Hartigan placed second in the 200 individual medley at 2:18.78, while Carlson was fourth in the 100 fly at 1:02.51. Hartigan will swim the 200 IM, 100 breast and 100 free at the U.S. Open and Carlson will compete in the 200 fly.
