University of Wyoming sophomoreScott Usher, a member of the UW swimming and diving team, placed 18th inthe 100-meter breaststroke Tuesday at the USA Swimming NationalChampionships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Usher, competing in a field of66 competitors, swam to a time of 1:04.26 which qualified him for the2004 USA Olympic Trials. Competing for the Quicksilver Club Team, Usherplaced eighth in the consolation finals.
"I'm very pleased how high he placed," said Wyoming head swimming anddiving coach Tom Johnson. "Qualifying for the Olympic Trials is atremendous accomplishment for any swimmer. He has trained extremelyhard and is very deserving of this."
Usher, from Grand Island, Neb., was the 2002 Mountain West Conferencechampion in the 200-breaststroke, swimming to the second-best time inconference history.
