Haapanen Achieves World Diving Ranking from FINA

Aug. 23, 2007

In the most recent FINA Diving World Rankings, former University of Wyoming diver Saara Haapanen was ranked as the 62nd best three-meter diver in the world.

Haapanen, who is a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario and has dual citizenship in Canada and Finland, has been competing internationally for the Finland National Diving Team since she ended her career and graduated from Wyoming this past spring.

Her high world ranking is due in part to her great showing at the 2007 FINA/USA Diving Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. last May. At that prestigious international meet, she placed 18th in the three-meter event with a five round score of 228.85.

In February of 2007, Haapanen became the first Cowgirl to win a Mountain West Conference championship in either swimming or diving when she won the one-meter event at the conference championship meet. In her career at Wyoming, she was a four-time First Team All-MWC performer.

Haapanen will leave Laramie on August 30 and travel to Finland where she will attend graduate school at the University of Jyvaskyla located in Jyvaskyla, Finland. She will compete and train with the Finish National Team while attending school.
