Wyoming Swimming and Diving Picked to Finish in Upper Tier of MWC

Sept. 27, 2007

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Cowboy swimming and diving team was picked to finish third in the 2007-08 Mountain West Conference regular season standings while the Cowgirls were picked fourth in a poll voted on by the leagues coaches, Thursday.

"This is a great testament to the work ethic of our kids," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "We are excited for the upcoming season and can't wait to get it started on October 12.

"Historically, we have finished higher at the end of the season standings than where we were picked at the beginning. I hope this will be a motivating factor this year, and we will go out and work hard every day and move up again this year."

The Cowboys welcome back 13 letterwinners from last season including eight First Team All-MWC performers. They will be led by a defending two-time MWC breaststroke champion in junior Alex Larkin. Junior Matt Urich, the conference's runner-up in both butterfly events will also lead the Pokes.

The Cowgirls welcome back 15 letterwinners and seven First Team All-MWC performers from one of the best teams in school history. Last season, the Cowgirls finished third in the MWC regular season standings with a dual record of 8-2. They will be led by junior Aimee Stinson who earned all-conference honors in three events and set four school records as a sophomore. Senior Brittany Wainwright, the UW record holder in one-meter and three-meter diving, will also lead the Cowgirls. Last season, she earned all-conference honors in two events.

UNLV was picked to win the men's conference title and BYU was selected as the preseason favorite on the women's side.

UNLV collected five first-place votes and a total of 25 points to capture the top spot in the men's poll. BYU received the remaining first-pace nod and totaled 21 points for second place, while Wyoming claimed third place with 16 points and Air Force landed in fourth with 12 points. Utah notched 10 points and was chosen fifth, while TCU was picked sixth with six points.

On the women's side, BYU received eight first-place votes and gathered 72 points to capture first-place acclaim, while UNLV collected the other first-place vote and was predicted to finish second with 63 points. Utah claimed the third spot with 55 points, while Wyoming was picked fourth with 46 points, Colorado State settled in at fifth with 39 points and TCU was chosen sixth with 32 points. New Mexico (23 points), San Diego State (18 points) and Air Force (12 points) rounded out the poll.

The UW swimming and diving team will begin the 2007-08 regular season on Friday, Oct. 12 when they travel to the University of Denver Relay meet. They will also host one exhibition meet before heading to Denver. They will compete in the annual Brown vs. Gold Intrasquad on Friday, Oct. 5. That meet will begin at 5 p.m. and will be held at Corbett Pool.
