UNLV junior Joe Bartoch and Wyoming freshman Carl Marais have been named Mountain West Conference Men's Co-Swimmers of the Week., while Cowboy sophomore John Lynch has been named Diver of the Week.
In his first collegiate meet, Marais brought home three individual victories, a second-place finish and was a part of four relay team wins at the Early Bird Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. On Friday, the Pretoria, South Africa, native, helped the Cowboy 400-yard medley relay squad to a victory in 3:24.35 and followed with a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (21.82). On Saturday, Marais led the 200-yard medley, 800 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams to new Early Bird Invitational record times of 1:33.55, 7:00.77 and 3:10.29, respectively. He also was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.15), the 100-yard backstroke (50.83) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.45), setting new Early Bird Invite records in all three events, as well.
Lynch, from San Antonio, Texas, won the 3-meter diving event and placed second in the 1-meter board at the Early Bird Invite. He turned in a score of 473.50 in the 3-meter, and a 281.70 in the 1-meter, as the Cowboys swept the top-three spots in both board events over the weekend.
Bartoch, an Ontario, Canada, native, led the Rebels to an upset of No. 17 Arizona State last week, winning two individual events and a relay. He started the meet as a part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team that turned in a time of 1:31.16. Bartoch followed with victories in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, clocking times of 45.99 and 49.79, respectively. For the meet, he earned 20.75 team points which was crucial in UNLV's 152.5-141.5 win over the Sun Devils. Bartoch was named this week's CollegeSwimming.com's National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week for his performance.
