The University of Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team opens its Mountain West schedule Saturday at noon against rival Boise State. Saturday’s dual meet will mark the first time the Cowgirls have competed in Corbett Pool this season. Released on Tuesday afternoon, the Endless Swimming /CollegeSwimming.com Poll had the Cowboys ranked No. 33 in this week’s rankings. The Cowgirls are also ranked in the weekly poll coming in at No. 50.
UW went 2-1 last weekend in the Windy City. The Cowgirls won their first dual of the season racing past Illinois-Chicago 152-84 on Friday. On Saturday, Wyoming also picked up a win over the Flames by a score of 220-80 and fell just short against No. 32 Northwestern 159-141.
The Cowgirls scored two impressive wins in the relay events against Big Ten power Northwestern. UW won the 200 medley relay at 1:44.70 with the team of senior Morgan Hartigan, sophomore Molly Coonce, junior Claudia Carlson and junior Melanie McDonough. The 400 freestyle relay team made up of Hartigan, Carlson, freshman Karissa Dahlquist and McDonough won the event with a time of 3:27.34.
Hartigan also added an individual win in the 100 freestyle on Saturday with a time of 49.94, as her time is the third-best in school history. She also highlighted UW's dual on Friday winning the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.32, the fifth- fastest time in Cowgirl history.
Boise State heads into Saturday’s dual with a 1-1 overall record. The Broncos return to the pool for the first time since Oct. 26. Last time out, BSU defeated BYU 178-122. Freshman swimmer Brittany Aoyama was Boise State’s top finisher in the meet winning two individual events and two relays, she was named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week after her efforts against the Cougars.
