Wyoming's Wainwright Named MWC Women's Diver of the Week

Dec. 6, 2006

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

Wyoming junior Brittany Wainwright was selected as the Mountain West Conference Women's Diver of the Week, while Utah senior Amber Walter received women's swimming honors after setting an MWC record in the 50 freestyle. UNLV sophomore Jonas Andersson and Utah senior Andrew Jones were selected as men's swimmer and diver of the week, respectively.

Wainwright, a graduate of Evanston (Wyo.) High School, won both board diving events against San Diego State on Nov. 21, while breaking a 17-year-old school record. She won the 3-meter event with a score of 297.00 - more than 23 points higher than her closest competition. She then turned in a new Wyoming record with a 299.55 in the one-meter dive, breaking the old mark of 279.60 set by Carlyn Heimerdinger in 1989. In a field at the Texas Invite last weekend that included seven top 25 ranked teams, Wainwright turned in the third-best preliminary score (266.65) before placing seventh out of 35 divers at 262.20. She placed ninth in the one-meter dive (247.45) and finished the weekend with an 11th-place finish in the platform (188.50).

Walter, from Kalispell, Mont., set a Utah and MWC record in the 50 freestyle with a swim of 22.59 at the Ohio State Invitational last weekend, winning the event with an NCAA Championship qualifying time. She broke the old mark of 22.78 set by Utah All-American Heidi Hausknecht in 2001. Walter then won the 100 free with a meet record time of 50.63 after swimming an MWC season best time of 50.40 in the prelims. She was also on the winning 200 free relay team that posted an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:33.21 and placed second in the 400 medley relay in a 3:46.38 clocking. She also helped the winning 400 free relay set a meet record in 3:23.81 before finishing second in the 100 breast in 1:03.52, which is also an NCAA B provisional qualifying time. Finally, she helped the 200 medley relay finish second in 1:43.82.

Andersson, a native of Enskede, Sweden, led the No. 23 Rebels to a sixth-place finish in a field of 11 teams that included three top-six nationally ranked squads at the Texas Invite last weekend. His fourth-place swim in the 200 breaststroke (1:59.25) set an MWC season-best time, while ranking as the third-fastest time in league history and second-fastest in the UNLV record books. Andersson followed that with a seventh-place swim in the 100 breast (55.54), setting another MWC season-best time. He helped set two more MWC season best times, swimming the breast leg on the fourth-place 200 and 400 medley relays. The 200-medley posted a time of 1:30.29, while the 400 medley finished in 3:17.27.

Jones, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, earned his third diver of the week honor for the season and his career by setting a Utah record in the platform 10 meter diving event at the Ohio State Invitational last weekend. His score of 269.40 set the new mark for the Utes.
