LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Jake Shanklin

Did you play any other sports in high school?
"Yea, I wrestled my freshman and sophomore year and played football for four."

What made you chose track?
"I struggled my senior year (in football) with a pretty negative coach, but I just finished it out for the rest of the guys on the team. But I don't think my body would have held up to well. Once I started to excel in track, I figured I would give it a shot."

What is your favorite event, weight throw or hammer throw?
"They are both equally as fun and basically the same technique. The only difference is that the indoor weight is 35 lbs. and the hammer is 16 lbs."

What do you do for the rest of the meet, once your event is over?
"Hang out, walk around and watch other kids. Last week I watched a kid attempt 7'6" in the high jump. There is always something going on or just find a nice tree to relax."

What is your favorite event to watch other than the throwing events?
"Probably the high jump or the sprints. I like them because they are power events, very explosive and I can relate to that."

Do you have any pre-throw routines?
"I do a lot of visualization, trying to picture the perfect throw, what it will feel like. Then usually just try to stay calm, because I usually get pretty worked up at meets."

Tell me something interesting about your hometown.
"Well I am from Ellensburg, Wash., and the last time I checked it has the number five rodeo in the world. Also there is really good snow-mobiling near the Stewart Mountains."

What type of music do you listen to?
"Mostly rock, but my theory is anything that stirs emotion. I really like anything from Garth Brooks to Mudvayne to Disturbed."

American Gladiators or WWE?
"They are both very corny, but probably American Gladiators."

Qdoba or Chipotle?
"Fat Burrito!"

If you could have dinner with one person who would it be and why?
"Ivan Tecon, he is a hammer thrower that has won three world championships, I think it would be pretty cool to sit down and talk to him."

Roger Clemens - Guilty or Innocent?
"Guilty, he is too old to be throwing that fast without being on HGH. I think a lot more people are on that stuff than people want to realize."
