Cowgirls Edge Kansas State to Win First Indoor Track Meet of 2002 Season

Cowgirl senior Fiona Lindo-Jeffreywon the 60-meter (7.76) and 200-meter dash (25.05) events at the KansasState Invitational Friday, January 11th helping Wyoming narrowly defeat Kansas Stateby two points for the team victory.

Wyoming finished the seventeen-event meet with 145 points to KansasState's 143. Nebraska-Omaha placed third with 137 points and EmporiaState placed fourth with 87.5 points to round out the field. TheCowgirls won six events, going 1-2 in the 200-meter hurdles and the60-meter hurdles and 1-2-3 in the 20-pound weight throw.

UW freshman Shauna Smith, from Sheridan, Wyo., broke the All-TimeWyoming school record by .01 seconds in the 400-meter dash in hercollegiate debut, winning the event in a time of 57.19. The old recordhad been held since 1981. Smith also placed second in the 60-meterhurdles (8.80).

The Cowgirls' also received first-pace showings from senior Kim Demersin the 600-yard run (1:28.90), junior Kelly Ann Charles in the 60-meterhurdles (8.73) and junior Crystal Smith in the 20-pound weight throw(59-7).

Other outstanding performances were given by senior Adelaide Harper whoplaced second in the 200-meter dash and fourth in the 60-meter dash,sophomore LeeAnn Forbes who finished third in the 800-meter run,freshman Ashley Mecham who finished second in the 3000-meter run, seniorEnioma Haynes who placed third in the triple jump, senior Julie Thomaswho placed second in the weight throw and sophomore Andrea Batt whoplaced third in both the shot put and weight throw events.

Smith and Thomas provisionally qualified for nationals in the 20-poundweight throw and Batt provisionally qualified in the shot put.

The Wyoming men will compete Saturday at the Kansas State Invitationalat Ahearn Fieldhouse in Manhattan, Kan., against Emporia State, KansasState and Oklahoma State in their first meet of the season.
