COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -Tyler Anderson placed second in the weight throw with a season-best toss of 64-4 to pace the University of Wyoming men's and women's track teams at the Air Force Invitational on Friday in Cadet Field House. The Cowboys and Cowgirls combined for 10 top-10 finishes in events that went final on Friday.
"A lot of events just ran preliminaries today, but we had a solid day," UW head coach Bryan Berryhill said. "The male throwers continued to post impressive marks this season. We have some other events that we are strong in tomorrow that we need to step up in."
Anderson's throw was just two inches short of two feet further than last weekend's mark, while it currently ranks first in the Mountain West and 24th in the nation. Senior Mason Finley placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 62-11 1/2. Other top-10 finishes for the Cowboys included freshman Bobby Wingeleth in seventh in the long jump with a season-best 22-3 1/2 and sophomore Scott Carter eighth in the long jump at 22-2 1/2.
Senior Jenna Mann and sophomore Catherine Cloetta won unseeded events on Friday for the Cowgirls. Cloetta ran 5:17 in the mile for a 10-second personal best, while Mann notched a personal-best 5-5 in the high jump. Junior Devon England placed fourth in the mile in 5:24, while sophomore Sabina Sandberg was third in the high jump at 5-5 as well. Junior Katie Higgins threw a personal-best 56-0 for eighth in the weight throw and senior Audrey West finished seventh in the long jump at 17-11 3/4. Sophomore Kereston Thomas qualified eighth for Saturday's final in the 200 meters at 25.52, while senior Taylor Gardner, redshirt junior Erin Kirby and sophomore McKenzie Brogan all qualified in the 400 meters. Gardner ran 57.98 for ninth, followed by Kirby in 11th at 58.12 and Brogan at 58.25 for 12th.
Action tomorrow at the Air Force Invitational begins at 10 a.m. MT.
