The University of Wyoming track andfield teams finished the first day at the Air Force Invitational Friday inColorado Springs, Colo. advancing 11 athletes into finals competition. FiveCowboys and six Cowgirls will be competing in the finals of their respectiveevents. The meet is full of talent from across the region as athletes fromColorado State, Colorado, New Mexico, Alabama, along with the Air ForceAcademy are participating.
The Cowboys will have three competitors in the weight throw finals; seniorDan Williams' mark of 61' 4 1/4" was the fourth best on the day, senior JohnGriffith finished with the fifth best throw with a 60' 7 3/4" toss andfreshman Zack Schaefer advanced to the finals with his throw of 60' 7 3/4".In the 800 meters Cowboys Jeremiah Johnson and Jeremiah Thompson finished inthe top eight with times of 1:55.62 and 1:56.46 to earn spots in tomorrow'schampionship final.
UW will have six Cowgirls in four different events competing inchampionship finals. Sophomore Shauna Smith had the best time of the day inthe 400 meter dash with a time of 56.46 to advance. Sophomore IngvildCarstens will also compete in the 400 meter final due to her preliminarytime of 58.96. Junior Kima Wells' 24.93 in the 200 meter dash was fourthbest on the day and earned her a spot in tomorrow's final. In the 800 meterssophomore Tanice Barnett and Lee Ann Forbes both advanced with times of2:20.44 and 2:25.12. Sophomore Courtney Schlegel will be competing infinals of the triple jump with her preliminary leap of 36' 7 1/2".
Not all events were scheduled for preliminary competition on Friday,preliminary competition along with championships will take place on Saturdaystarting at 10 a.m.
