GILLETTE, Wyo. -
Senior Holly Page set a school record in the 3,000 meters to highlight four all-time top-10 performances for the University of Wyoming track and field teams during Saturday's Powder River Triangular at the Campbell County Rec Center. The Cowboys downed Northern Colorado, 80-60, but fell to Montana State, 75-73, while the Cowgirls earned a 75-72 win over the Bears and lost to the Bobcats as well, 87-61.
"Holly was very poised out there today," UW head coach Bryan Berryhill said. "She proved last cross country season she is the best distance Cowgirl ever and she came out today in her first race since cross country nationals and reasserted that. Holly was just Holly today. She was cool, calm and collected and ran within herself."
Page placed second in Saturday's race with an altitude- and track-converted 9:36.67 to best Emily Higgins' 9:42.25 run in 2009. Page now ranks in Wyoming's top 10 indoors in the mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. Sophomore Audra DeStefano, a native of Gillette, Wyo., was third in a personal-best 9:41, good for second in Cowgirl history after Page's performance. Both marks are more than 10 seconds faster the previous best mark in the Mountain West this season. Fellow sophomore Kerry White ran the ninth-fastest mile in UW history with a 5:01 to place second on Saturday, while freshman Ricky Faure won the men's mile in 4:08, also ranking ninth in UW history.
"We had some very good performances on the track today, but overall we have to get better in the track events," Berryhill said. "In the field events, we got a lot better today. This is a great venue to run fast and throw and jump far. The Campbell County Rec Center and all the volunteers up here made it a very inviting venue."
Other highlights for the Cowgirls included senior Shreese Daniels winning two field events. She topped the shot put with a toss of 46-0 1/2 and claimed victory in the weight throw with a mark of 63-6 3/4. Junior Sabina Sandberg won the high jump at 5-5 and placed second in the long jump with a personal-best 18-3. Senior Erin Kirby was runner-up in the 400 meters in 57.06, while junior McKenzie Brogan was third at 57.26. Sophomore Mikalah Skates ran 8.72 in the 60-meter hurdles for third.
For the Cowboys, senior Colin Herold won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.34, while junior Scott Carter was victorious in the triple jump with a mark of 47-10 and senior Paul Thomas in the shot put at 51-5 3/4. Junior Tyler Anderson claimed runner-up in the weight throw courtesy of a toss of 62-2 1/4, while sophomore Bobby Wingeleth had the same finish in the long jump at 22-8. Graduate student Thomas Atkinson was third in the 800 meters in 1:53 and junior Amos Bowen was third in the 3,000 meters in 8:24.
Wyoming next travels to the Air Force Team Challenge on Friday.
