Gervais Qualifies for 2001 NCAA Track and Field Championships

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Wyoming senior Jason Gervaisautomatically qualified for the 2001 NCAA Indoor Track and FieldChampionships in the 35-pound weight throw Saturday at the Iowa StateClassic in Ames, Iowa, with a toss of 70-5 3/4. Gervais went on toplace third in the event.

Junior Mervin Swaby provisionally qualified for nationals in the longjump after placing fourth with a personal best mark of 25-1 1/4. Swabyalso placed sixth in the triple jump behind teammate Quincy Howe whoplaced third in the triple jump with a leap of 51- 3/4. Senior JasonHammond provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the shot put afterplacing fourth with a throw of 59-4. Hammond also placed fifth in the35-pound weight throw.

"Overall we had a good meet," said Wyoming head coach Don Yentes. "Wehad a number of our athletes record personal best times at this meet.Right now we're just putting the finishing touches on preparingourselves for the conference meet."

Other top Wyoming performances were by sophomore Kima Wells, who placed14th in the 60-meter dash, sophomore Kelly Ann Charles (ninth in the60-meter hurdles) and junior Julie Thomas (eighth in the 20-pound weightthrow).

Wyoming hosts the Robert Shine Invitational Saturday Feb. 17, at theWar Memorial Fieldhouse in its final tune-up before the Mountain WestConference Championships.
