Wyoming's Roe Currently First in Heptathlon at MWC Champioships

After four events, Cowboy junior Olav Roe is currently standing in first place in the heptahlon at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, in Albuquerque, N.M.

After Thursday, Roe accumulated a score of 3,023 points, just ahead of Dan Feltman (UNM) with 3,002 points and Brian Walsh's (AFA) point total of 3,001. Also, UW junior Phillip Thomas is presently in sixth place with 2,833 points.

Roe's day started in the 60-meter dash where he finished fifth with a time of 7.24. He then soared 21' 10-1/4" in the long jump and a fourth place finish. Next was one of his better events in the the heptahlon, the shot put. He tossed one out 46' 7-1/4" to finish first in the event with one event remaining on the day. In the high jump, Roe finished third by clearing the bar at 6' 4-1/4", with his teammate Thomas taking the event with a height of 6' 6-3/4".

"Both guys did a very good job today," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "I hope they can feed off the momentum from today and carry it over into tomorrow's competition."

The three remaining heptathlon events on Friday include the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault, and 1,000-meter run. Competition is set to begin on Friday at 10 a.m. with the heptathlon and 1 and 1:30 p.m. with the field and track events.
