LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Cowgirl 4x400 meter relay team ran the current fourth best time in the nation on Saturday in Ames, Iowa at the Iowa State Last Chance Qualifier. Their time of 3:33.66 will also qualify them for the NCAA Nationals next weekend.

The team included senior All-Americans Shauna Smith and Jessica Fox, sophomore Amanda Hopper, and freshman Sharon Larrier. This time is not only the fourth fastest in the nation, but also the second best time in Wyoming history. This team joins individuals Smith, Fox, senior thrower Zack Schaefer, and junior jumper Blake Jackson as NCAA qualifiers. However, Jackson and Schaefer will not compete at the NCAA meet due to injuries.

"It was very exciting," said UW head coach Don Yentes."Jessica Fox had a gutsy performance with the flu. Overall it was on heck of an effort and I am really proud of these girls."

Senior All-American Kyle Herl competed Saturday at the Husky Last Chance Qualifier in Seattle, Wash., but was unable to qualify for nationals in the weight throw. Herl's marks this year were good enough to provisionally qualify, but he needed the automatic distance to get to nationals.

Wyoming's four student-athlete qualifiers will compete next weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 11-12.
