Wyoming Track and Field Team Successful at Rob Upton Invitational

The University of Wyoming track andfield team had a solid day of performances Saturday at the Rob UptonInvitational in Fort Collins, Colo. UW won six individual events and onerelay at the meet.

"We had some big improvements from some of our athletes," said Wyominghead track and field coach Don Yentes. "The team really performed welland stepped it up this week and we're really starting to get thingsgoing for us."

Cowboy senior Jason Hammond has an outstanding day winning the hammer(231-1) and the shot put (57-2 3/4). His mark in the hammerprovisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. Sophomore SethBilly was the other men's individual winner, taking first in the 400hurdles with a time of 51.94. The Poke men also received strongperformances from senior Shane Rasby (fourth, 400 hurdles), junior KarlDavis (fourth, 400-meter dash) and senior Derek Woodske (second,hammer).

A young Cowgirl squad picked up three individual first-place finishersand also won the 4x100-meter relay. Sophomore Kima Wells, one of thetop short sprinters in the Mountain West Conference, ran the secondfastest 400-meter dash in Wyoming history (56.20) on her way tovictory. Sophomore Kelly Ann Charles won the 100-meter dash (14.76) andfreshman Andrea Batt was victorious in the javelin with a toss of137-11.

Junior Fiona Lindo-Jeffrey had a solid outing with a second-placefinish in the 200-meter dash and a third-place showing in the 100-meterdash. Senior Kim Demers placed third in the 400 hurdles, sophomoreJennifer Vessa finished fifth in the 1500-meter run with a personal besttime, junior Julie Thomas placed fourth in the hammer, freshman ChanJohnson placed tied for second in the high jump and freshman StephanieAnderson finished fourth in the pole vault.

The Wyoming track and field team will next travel to Greeley, Colo.,April 7, for the Tom Benich Classic.
