The University of Wyoming track and field team competed in the Tom Benich Classic, on the campus of the University of Northern Colorado, on Saturday.
The Cowgirls captured event victories in nine of 21 events, including the 4x400 meter relay. That relay team ran to a time of 3:58.87. Junior Kima Wells captured two event victories on the day in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. She ran to a time of 11.83 in the 100 and 24.77 in the 200. Senior Adelaide Harper trailed Wells and placed second in both events. Sophomore Jessica Fox won the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.79, the time breaks her own record to become the fastest time in school history. Sophomore Erin Knecht placed second in the event running a time of 59.40. The Cowgirls claimed the top three spots in the 3,000 meter run with freshman Jennifer Thompson winning the event in 10:53.00. Sophomore Ashley Mecham placed second (11:00.95) and freshman Elena Helemerick placed third (11:07.71). They also swept the top three in the 100 meter high hurdles with senior Kelly Ann Charles leading the way with a time of 14.33. Shaunna Smith placed second (14.50) and senior Kim Demers placed third (15.00). Smith also claimed victory in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 58.92. Senior Lisa Throener won the high jump by jumping a height of 5' 41/2".
On the men's side of the meet the Cowboys claimed three event victories. Freshman Jeremiah Johnson won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:51.83. Senior Mervin Swaby won the long jump with a distance of 24' 6" and placed second in the triple jump with a jump of 51' 8". Fellow senior Quincy Howe took top honors in the triple jump jumping to a distance of 54'. Freshman Blake Jackson completed the Cowboy sweep in the event with a third place distance of 46' 6". Freshman Michael Huntington placed second in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:28.72 and freshman Brian Knight placed third in 15:29.99. The Cowboys placed second in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 41.94. Sophomore Bret Zowada placed third in the decathlon with a score of 5,774.
The University of Wyoming track and field team will return to action next weekend. The Cowboys and Cowgirls will travel to Weber State.
