Wyoming Track and Field Team Gives Solid Effort at Tom Benich Classic

One school record fell and one moreathlete provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships Saturdayhighlighting a solid outing for the Wyoming track and field team at theTom Benich Classic in Greeley, Colo.

Freshman Stephanie Anderson, from Cheyenne, Wyo., broke the Wyomingschool record and set a new personal record in the women's outdoor polevault after clearing a height of 11-6 1/2, which placed her second inthe event.

Cowboy senior Derek Woodske had a personal record in the men's hammerwith a toss of 204-7, placing him second behind teammate Jason Hammond.Woodske's mark provisionally qualified him for the 2001 NCAA OutdoorTrack and Field Championships. Woodske is the third Wyoming athlete toprovisionally qualify for nationals this season joining Hammond (hammer)and senior Joe Hall (10,000-meter run).

"The team is coming along and doing a great job. I was very pleasedwith our effort today considering we were just coming out of a bigtraining cycle." said Wyoming head coach Don Yentes. "The big breakthrough today was Stephanie Anderson having a great day in the polevault and breaking the school record."

Wyoming athletes won six events with senior Hammond leading the chargewith victories in the shot put (54-9 1/4) and the hammer (217-6), andplaced second in the discus (165-2). Sophomore Kima Wells won thewomen's 100-meter dash in a time of 11.92, senior Davina Strauss won thewomen's long jump with a leap of 18-1, junior Julie Thomas won thewomen's hammer with a mark of 176-7 and freshman Andrea Batt won thejavelin with a throw of 143-10 to go along with a second-place finish inthe discus (150-7).

The Cowboys' only men's sprinter Karal Davis had a strong day placingfourth in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 400-meter dash. HurdlersSeth Billy and Shane Rasby also performed well for the Pokes placingthird and fourth respectively in the 400-intermediate hurdles.Sophomore Dan Williams also placed in the top five for the Cowboys,placing fifth in the hammer and fifth in the discus.

The Cowgirls had a number of top five performances as well at the TomBenich Classic. UW Sophomore Kelly Ann Charles placed third in the100-meter hurdles, sophomore Melissa Laycock finished third in the 400hurdles, senior Kim Demers placed fifth in the 400 hurdles, freshmanDakota Smith placed third in the high jump and freshman Jody Sanbornfinished fourth in the pole vault.

"The kids are doing a very good job performing, it's just taking alittle bit of time making the transition from the indoor season tooutdoors," Yentes said. "I think in the next three or four weeks weshould be able to get some more times to drop down."

Wyoming will travel back to Greeley this weekend to compete in theCowtown Classic.
