AZUSA, Calif. -Kyle Sullivan finished Thursday's five events of the decathlon with a personal-best 6,841 points to claim third in the event at the Mt. SAC Relays. His performance keeps him seventh in the event in Cowboy history and is the top mark in the Mountain West this season by more than 1,300 points.
"Mt. SAC is one of the longer decathlons due to the amount of entries, so there was a little bit of a lull in there after two of his down events, but he finished the strongest I've ever seen," UW assistant coach Shaun Meinecke said. "It is a learning experience and will set him up for some good decathlons down the road that flow a little better. He is leading the conference in the event and the good part is he is healthy and can keep doing the training."
Sullivan surpassed his previous best mark by 129 points thanks to two more personal bests on Thursday after notching four on Wednesday. He opened the day with a 15.06 in the 110-meter hurdles and followed with a career-best 117-7 in the discus. He cleared 12-9 1/2 in the pole vault, before throwing the javelin 139-11 and ending the day with a career-best 4:41.69 in the 1,500 meters. His 6,841 points in the event currently rank 17th in the West region and 32nd in the NCAA.
Wyoming has several distance runners competing late on Thursday night, but the majority of the Cowboys and Cowgirls will begin competition at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday.
