AZUSA, Calif. - Wyoming junior Jenna Mann completed the final three events of the heptathlon with personal-best marks Thursday afternoon at the California Invitational Combined Events in Azusa, Calif.
The Bayview Crescent, Saskatchewan, native finished 10th in the 30-athlete field with a career-best 5,074 points, breaking her own UW all-time No. 2 record and falling just short of Kathy Romsa's school-best 5,258 from the 1984 season. Her previous best tally was 4,828 from last season, and her season best from this year was 4,754 at the Air Force Relays two weeks ago.
"Jenna made big strides today and showed huge improvements from her performance at Air Force," said Wyoming assistant coach Shaun Meinecke. "For her to jump that much in just two weeks' time shows that she had a lot more confidence and focus on the second day this time around. She did what she wanted to accomplish and got points where she needed them. She took advantage of this meet's environment and didn't overthink, but just went out and competed. She's headed in the right direction."
Mann placed 10th in the long jump at 18'-3.75" for 723 points, breaking her former personal best of 18'-3." After finishing 10th in the javelin throw at 107'-7.75," she came in 12th in the 800-meter run in 2:25.33, breaking her previous personal-best time of 2:27.18.
Utah State's Chari Hawkins won the field with 5,441 points, while Anne Martin of Nebraska came in second with 5,321.
