Demers Highlights Wyoming's Performances at Mt. SAC Relays

A small contingent of athletes fromthe University of Wyoming track and field team competed against some ofthe top athletes in the nation this weekend at the three-day Mt. SanAntonio College Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Highlighting Wyoming's performances was senior Kim Demers who ran alifetime personal best in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.91.Demers, from Timmons, Ont., placed first in her heat and had the sixthbest time among 29 competitors. Her time also ranks as third-best inUW record books.

Sophomore Chan Johnson moved into second place all-time in the Cowgirlrecord books in the high jump with a leap of 5-8, tying her lifetimebest mark she set during the 2002 indoor season. Johnson tied for thirdin her flight.

The only Cowgirl to compete in two events, sophomore Andrea Batt,placed 7th in her flight of the discus with a toss of 158-8 and fifth inher flight of the shot put with a mark of 48-9. UW had two athletescompete in the 100-meter hurdles, freshman Shauna Smith and junior KellyAnn Charles. Charles placed third in her heat with a time of 14.22.Smith placed fifth in her heat with a time of 14.03 even though shetripped over the final hurdle and rolled across the finish line.Despite her stumble, Smith's time ranks as fifth-best all-time at UW.Senior sprinter Adelaide Harper was the only other Cowgirl to compete atMt. SAC. Harper placed third in her heat of the 200-meter dash with atime of 24.50, her best time of the season.

Wyoming's men were led by junior Seth Billy who placed first in hisheat of the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 51.31. SeniorMervin Swaby competed in both the 100-meter dash, where he placed sixthin his heat (11.03), and the long jump, where he placed sixth in theInvitational division with a mark of 24-1. Junior Quincy Howe alsocompeted in the more difficult Invitational division, placing eighth inthe triple jump with a leap of 51-7.

"The whole team was a little off of really busting out with some greattimes and marks, but we're getting close," said UW head coach DonYentes. "It was a little disappointing that we weren't able to turn insome better performances especially out here."

The Wyoming track team will make the short trip south to Fort Collins,Colo., for its next meet when they compete in the Jack ChristiansenInvitational on Sat., April 27.
