Track & Field Concludes First Day At Drake Relays

Wyoming junior Jason Gervais brokethe Wyoming school record on his way to winning the men's discus titleat the Drake Relays Friday in Des Moines, Iowa. With a throw of 205'1", Gervais won the discus by over eight feet.

In one of the largest national meets prior to the NCAA Championships,Gervais showed that he is one of the best all-around throwers in thenation. The mark of 205' 1" is an automatic qualifier and was a littleover a foot from the Drake Relays meet record. The mark also breaksGervais' own school record at UW.

The Cowboy 4 X 400-meter relay team placed second in their heat with atime of 3:10.77. Wyoming finished ahead of Kansas and Georgia, whilenarrowly finishing behind Baylor. Sophomore Mervin Swaby was sixth inthe long jump with a leap of 23' 11 3/4" and in the 400-meter dash SethBilly placed fourth (52.55) and Shane Rasby was sixth (54.25).

The Cowgirl relay teams had a successful day as well. The 4 X100-meter team placed second with a time of 46.38 and the 4 X 200-meterteam was third, clocking in at 1:39.94. Also performing well forWyoming were Jorah Roylance in the javelin (fifth, 143' 3"), Kima Wellsin the 100-meter dash (fifth, 11.89) and Tomeca Brown in the 100-meterhurdles (fifth, 14.50).

"I was really pleased and excited about Jason's performance," said headcoach Larry Judge. "To perform that well in a meet of this magnitude isa real achievement. This shows that Jason is really coming on andhopefully this will improve his confidence as we move towards the end ofthe season."

The remainder of the meet will be completed on Saturday.
