LAS VEGAS - Jenna Mann and Sabina Sandberg finished the final three heptathlon events with personal-best point totals Thursday afternoon to complete the multi-events of the 2013 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships at UNLV's Partridge Stadium in Las Vegas.
Mann recorded a career-best 5,200 points for third place to give Wyoming six team points as she topped her previous best of 5,074 points and maintain UW's second best all-time tally for the heptathlon in school history. The total is just 58 points short of Kathy Romsa's Wyoming-best 5,258 from the 1984 season. Her third-place finish gives her an unofficial all-conference honor for the event.
Sandberg also finished strong as she placed 11th with 4,482 points, beating her previous best of 4,164 to move from No. 9 to No. 5 on the UW all-time list for the heptathlon. Her tally moved her past Ingvild Carsten's 4,478 from the 2004 season by four points.
"Starting off with two personal bests is a great way to set the tone for the rest of the meet," said Wyoming assistant coach Shaun Meinecke. "I'm proud of the girls for how hard they competed and represented our program. Jenna's progression this year has been phenomenal. To earn All-MW in this field is a big accomplishment.
"The great thing not only about Jenna and Sabina, but the team as a whole, is that they are never satisfied and are always looking to improve. We are definitely looking forward to Friday and Saturday to continue to put up great marks."
Mann, a Bayview Crescent, Saskatchewan, native, earned a personal best in the 800-meter with a 2:23.96, beating her former best of 2:25.33, for sixth place and 771 points. She placed fourth in both the long jump (18'-1", 703 pts) and javelin throw (111'-2", 550 pts).
Sandberg came in eighth place in both the long jump (17'-2.75", 628 pts) and javelin throw (98'-8", 478 pts). She finished the heptathlon with a 12th-place time of 2:40.56 in the 800-meter for 566 points.
San Diego State's Allison Reaser (5,612) and Brittany Bozeman (5,221) took the top two spots to give the Aztecs 18 team points in the championship.
Friday's MW open competition begins at 9 a.m. with the track events and the field events are slated for 11 a.m. Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m. with the running events while the field events resume at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw. The awards ceremony is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. that day to conclude the meet.
