LAS VEGAS - Senior Henry Ferreira won a Mountain West title in the javelin and several Wyoming athletes posted strong marks Friday to advance to Saturday's final rounds of the 2013 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships at UNLV's Partridge Stadium in Las Vegas.
Wyoming is currently in fourth place on the men's side with 31 points and eighth place on the women's with 13 points. Friday's events were highlighted by Ferreira's first-place javelin throw of 224 feet to give the Pokes 10 team points. The distance, which is 29th best in the nation, is a UW all-time best mark for the event as he topped Guy Tucker's mark of 223 feet from the 1995 season and beat a previous personal best of 212'-2" from earlier this season. He was last year's MW runner-up for the event.
"Henry stepped up big and had to get a personal record to win and crushed it by over 11 feet," said Wyoming associate head coach Paul Barrett. "I'm very proud of him and his competitive effort."
Senior Diana Long placed third in the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries in 59.34, Wyoming's second best all-time mark, to qualify for the finals and beat her previous best time of 59.90. She and junior Taylor Gardner will compete in the final round Saturday at 2:35 p.m.
"I thought it was a great day and good to see so many of our athletes advance to the finals," said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. "I thought we competed with heart and passion, which is what we hoped to see."
Sophomore Holly Page came in third place in the 10,000-meter run in 36:53.19 to earn All-MW honors for the event and provide the Cowgirls six team points. Sophomore Devon England came in 10th in 39:30.31, her first career 10,000-meter.
Seniors Stephen Michel and Lenyn Leonce had solid distances in the long jump as the duo earned respective third- and fifth-place marks of 23'-10.75" and 23'-7.50" for a total of 10 Cowboy points. Throwers Paul Thomas, Joe Plante and Mark Sparks earned 10 team points with their fourth-, fifth- and eighth-place distances for the event.
In the men's 100-meter dash, Michel and sophomore Jason Roascio qualified for the finals with respective third- and ninth-place marks. Roascio ran a personal-best 10.80 in the preliminaries as both will compete Saturday at 2:05 p.m. The 110-meter hurdles foursome of Brandon Douglass, Colin Herold, Aaron Praska and Mark Flegel all qualified for Saturday's finals and will race at 1:25 p.m.
Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m. with the running events while the field events resume at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw. The awards ceremony is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. to conclude the meet.
