LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Cowgirl sophomore Andrea Batt had an outstanding day of competition Friday at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, winning the conference title in the shot put and finishing runner-up in the javelin. Batt, from Huson, Mont., won the shot put with a throw of 51- 3/4 and placed second in the javelin with a toss of 157-6, earning All-Conference honors in both events. Batt's huge first day helped the Cowgirls finish fifth in the team standings with 20 points. Defending champion Brigham Young leads the women's team race with 75 points.
"We had a very good day overall," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "Our women did everything they were supposed to do and we got everybody into the finals that we thought could get through. We've got a lot of people in the finals tomorrow which puts us in a great position to possibly move up into the top three. They ladies had to run hard today but I'm hoping they will come through and put everything on the line tomorrow."
The only other Cowgirl to earn team points was junior Stephanie Hanks who placed seventh in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:14.66. Senior Enioma Haynes placed ninth in the long jump with a leap of 17-3 1/4. In prelims the Cowgirls had a solid day with freshman Jessica Fox taking first in the 400-meter dash (53.53) and freshman Shauna Smith finishing with the top time in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (60.35).
Wyoming's men had a solid day, breaking two school records and placing three athletes in the top three of their respective events. Junior Mervin Swaby broke the school record in the long jump with a leap of 25-4 3/4. Swaby's jump was good enough for second place which earned him All-Conference honors. His mark broke the previous record of 25-1 1/2 held by Charles Thomas since 1965.
Junior Seth Billy broke the school record in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with the top qualifying time of 50.45. Billy broke Jason Medearis' record of 50.82 he set in 1999.
Earning All-Conference accolades was junior Quincy Howe, who placed third in the long jump with a lifetime best jump of 24-5 1/2 and junior Dan Williams who placed third in the hammer with a toss of 179-11. Williams also placed 6th in the shot put (51-8 1/4). Junior Craig Suter placed fourth in the shot put (52-2) and junior John Griffith placed fourth in the hammer (178-1) rounding out the Cowboys top performers.
The Cowboys sit in fifth overall with 37 points. Colorado State leads the men's team standings with 70 points.
"Our men have done a very good job. We have limited numbers, but all those guys are all rising to the occasion and doing a good job. Hopefully we'll keep it going tomorrow and crank it out and have some fun." Yentes said.
The 2002 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships will conclude on Saturday at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
