Track and Field Opens at Outdoor Conference Championships

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming track and field team began their quest for the final WAC Championship title, as the WAC Track and Field Championships started today in Ft. Collins, Colo.

The decathlon and heptathlon were the only scheduled events on the first day of competition. On the men's side, Gregg Sawyer had a big day. He currently sits in first place in the decathlon with a total of 3,727 points. Sawyer ran a personal best 48.90 in the 400-meter dash. Senior Justin Smith is also in the hunt with 3,671 points placing him in third in the competition. With a high jump mark of 68" and a time of 51.30 in the 400-meter dash, Smith eclipsed personal marks.

On the women's side, Shelly Wedemeyer is the only Cowgirl competing in the heptathlon. She finished the day with 2,544 points, which has her currently in eighth place.

Five of ten events in the decathlon and four of seven in the heptathlon were completed on Wednesday, the remaining events to be completed Thursday. The track and field championships will go through Saturday, with the team champion named at that time.
