Senior Gervais Wins Discus, Freshman Batt Wins Javelin at MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming track andfield teams picked up a pair of individual conference titles Friday onday one of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and FieldChampionships.

Freshman Andrea Batt, from Huson, Mont., set a new conference and UWschool record in the javelin with a winning throw of 168-8. Batt brokethe old record set by Cowgirl Jorah Roylance last season.

Senior Jason Gervais captured his fourth conference title as a Cowboyby winning the men's discus with a toss of 196-2 on his last throw ofthe day. Gervais' mark was nearly ten feet further than thesecond-place finisher. Teammate Jason Hammond also placed in thediscus, finishing fifth with a toss of 164-4.

In the overall team standings the Cowgirls sit in fifth-place with 19points. BYU leads the women's race with 85 points. The Cowboys are infifth as well with 17 points. Air Force stands first on the men's sideafter one day of competition with 79 points.

"We've had a nice meet so far and I feel we've gotten off to a goodstart," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "I'm pleased with the way theteam is performing."

In preliminary action, junior Karal Davis, who was seeded tenth goinginto the 400-meter dash, finished with the fourth-best time of the day(48.40). Senior Shane Rasby finished seventh in his first long jumpcompetition of the outdoor season (21-5 1/2), however it wasn't enoughto qualify him for finals. Cowgirl sophomore Kim Demers turned in thethird best time in school history in the 400-meter hurdles, placingfourth in the prelims with a time of 1:00.76.

The 2001 MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will conclude onSaturday, May 19.
