Wyoming Track Teams Finish MWC Outdoor Championships With 13 All-Conference Performers

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming track andfield teams concluded the 2001 outdoor season with a successful finalday of competition Saturday in San Diego, Calif., at the Mountain WestConference Championships.

UW picked up two more individual conference titles giving the team fourconference champions overall at the championships. Senior Jason Hammondwon the hammer title with a toss of 214-2, giving him his secondconsecutive hammer title. Sophomore Seth Billy earned his first everconference title by winning the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with aseason best time of 51.31.

Overall the Cowboys placed fifth (90 points) out of six teams, just onepoint out of fourth. BYU won the men's title with 240 points. TheCowgirls battled their way to a fourth-place finish (70 points) out ofeight schools. BYU's women also won the conference team title with229.83 points. As a team Wyoming athletes earned 13 All-Conferencehonors for their performances.

"I was very pleased with the teams efforts today," said UW head coachDon Yentes. "We really had some people step it up and give greatperformances. The men's team probably scored 20-25 more points than weshould have scored so I was extremely happy how they finished. Thewomen really improved upon their finish from the indoor championshipswhich was nice to see. The women had a very solid meet."

The Cowboys swept the first three places in the hammer with Hammondwinning the event followed by senior Derek Woodske in second (197-8) andsenior Jason Gervais in third (192-9). Senior Joe Hall had a solidouting for the Pokes as well placing second in the 5000-meter run with atime of 14:38.43. Hammond finished off his strong meet with athird-place finish in the shot put (58-8).

Cowgirl Sophomore Kima Wells broke her own school record in the400-meter dash with a time of 54.64, which placed her third. JuniorJulie Thomas placed second in the hammer with a throw of 182-11,sophomore Kim Demers placed third in the 400-meter low hurdles with atime of 1:00.27, junior Fiona Lindo-Jeffrey finished third in the200-meter dash with a time of 24.39 and the Cowgirls' 4x400-meter relayteam placed third with a time of 3:48.33.
