AUSTIN, Texas - Six Wyoming athletes represented the program well on the opening day of the NCAA West Preliminary Thursday at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Coming in as the No. 18 seed in the west and ranked 31st in the NCAA, senior Joe Plante tied for 17th in the discus throw at 177'-9." The distance topped his 2012 mark at the meet and improved three spots in placement after finishing 20th last year. He will compete Friday at 1 p.m. in the hammer throw. Sophomore Paul Thomas fouled his three discus throw attempts and did not place.
"Joe just missed the finals as the last guy out," said associate head coach Paul Barrett. "I thought he competed great. He's been banged up the past few weeks, so I was pleased with his effort. He'll get back at it tomorrow in the hammer.
"Paul had some toe foul issues and was not able to keep his throws fair. Being a sophomore, it was a great experience for the future and I'm proud of his tremendous season ranked 20th in the NCAA."
Senior Lenyn Leonce had a solid finish in the men's long jump, finishing 29th at a distance of 23'-10.25." He came into the meet as the No. 47 seed for the event after not placing at the 2012 preliminary.
In the women's 400-meter hurdles, junior Taylor Gardner placed 34th in 1:01.02, while senior Diana Long came in 35th in 1:01.08. Coming in as No. 32 and No. 29 seeds, respectively, the duo achieved sixth- and seventh-place times in their respective heats.
Sophomore Shreese Daniels arrived in 42nd place in the women's hammer throw at a distance of 172'-10." She came to the meet as the No. 45 seed for the event.
"I'm proud of the effort our athletes have made this year just to be at the preliminary, which is an honor itself," said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. "For our underclassmen here, it is a good experience to prepare for moving forward. For our seniors, it's a good way to go out and I'm proud of what they've done for the program throughout their careers."
Brandon Douglass and Colin Herold will compete in the 110-meter hurdles at 4:30 p.m. Friday, while Jenna Mann will run the women's100-meter hurdles at 5 p.m. Should they advance, the quarterfinals round for the events are slated for Saturday at 6:20 p.m. and 6:05 p.m., respectively.
