AUSTIN, Texas - Despite strong efforts by four Wyoming seniors to qualify for the finals, the 2013 track and field season came to a close Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary in Austin, Texas.
"It was evident our athletes were doing their best and giving their full effort," said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. "We came knowing we'd be facing some of the nation's top athletes in our sport and I think we represented the state and university well. It was an honor for the 11 Wyoming athletes to be here, and we look to increase that number in the future."
Brandon Douglass placed 22nd in the quarterfinals round of the 110-meter hurdles in 14.28 to finish the year. His career as a Cowboy includes UW's fourth best all-time 110-meter hurdles (13.97), ninth-best pole vault (15'-1) and eighth-best decathlon (6,620), among several indoor records. He came into the regional as the No. 19 seed for the event and ranked 49th nationally.
Joe Plante was able to compete in the hammer throw Saturday morning after the event was postponed Friday due to heavy rain. After two fouls, the Maynard, Minn., native threw a distance of 192'-5" for 29th place, not quite enough to make the cut of 16 for three additional throws. He finishes his Cowboy career with UW's No. 5, No. 9 and No. 10 all-time throws in the discus, hammer and weight throw, respectively.
Henry Ferreira competed in the javelin throw Saturday afternoon and reached a best distance of 212'-0" for the day for 20th place, also not quite enough to advance for three more throws. The distance was the third-best of the year and fourth best of his career. He finishes his career with UW's all-time best javelin throw from his 224'-0" two weeks ago at the MW Championships to win his first MW title.
"Henry was close and just missed the cut for the finals," said associate head coach Paul Barrett. "He competed well and gave it his best shot. Joe gave it a go, but his body wasn't in agreement and wasn't able to hold his counter positions.
"I'm going to miss both of these Cowboys as both have left their mark as some of the best to throw in UW history. Both were MW champs during some point of their careers and were significant contributors to our program."
Senior Mollie Dahl completed the women's shot put in 46th place at a distance of 46'-2.50." She finishes her Cowgirl career as UW's No.3 all-time record holder for the event (51'-2.25") and was a two-time runner-up at the MW Championships both seasons she competed for Wyoming.
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships run from June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
