May 26, 2012

AUSTIN, Texas - Junior Joe Plante provided the highlights for the University of Wyoming track and field program Saturday at the conclusion of the NCAA West Preliminary round. The UW track and field teams closed out the season Saturday.

Plante had UW's best finish of the NCAA West Preliminary round, coming in 20th in the discus with a throw of 175 feet, 11 inches. He was just 10 feet short of the top 12 to qualify for the NCAA National Championships. His freshman teammate Paul Thomas was 41st in the same event, with a throw of 162-0.

Senior Ashley Hutchinson finished 41st with a toss of 175-9 in the hammer throw to cap off a great UW career. She holds four marks in UW's all-time record book.

"It was a tough way to go out that close for Joe," UW throws coach Paul Barrett said. "He had a great season, being crowned MW champ, and will be back next year. Paul gained great experience for future seasons and had a stellar freshman year.

"Ashley had a rough day but also has had a tremendous senior season."

Senior Taylor Kelting finished off the day for Wyoming, finishing 29th in the 5,000-meter run. He had a time of 14:46.06.
