    AUSTIN, Texas -

At the end of the first day of the West Region NCAA Preliminary meet, the University of Wyoming Cowboys and Cowgirls had two qualify to run in the quarterfinals in their respective events.

Senior Kekoa Chavez ran the 21st fastest 400-meter hurdle time of 51.64 while Cowgirl Afiya Walker finished 17th after the first race with her time of 54.02 in the 400-meter dash.

"Afiya ran a comfortable race and qualified for the quarterfinals that will be run on Friday, while Kekoa ran a solid race to also move on," said head coach Don Yentes.

The Cowboys had two freshmen compete in the 100-meter dash that both failed to move on. Mario Harris and Stephen Michel finished 37th and 39th respectively with their tough start to the West Regional Meet. Meanwhile still on the men's side, freshman Lenyn Leonce finished 21st and was just three inches from making it to the finals.

"It was unfortunate, Lenyn jumped well but didn't have enough," said Yentes. "We also had Cowgirl Taylor Gardner come down with an injured foot and couldn't compete in the 400-meter hurdles."

Friday's action will bring Sam Lambert in the hammer throw, Johnna Jeffries in the high jump and Harris in the 200-meter dash along with Chavez and Walker fighting for a ticket to Eugene, Oregon.
