Graduate students Harry Fisher and Thomas Atkinson advanced in the 800 meters for the University of Wyoming track and field teams on Thursday during the NCAA West Preliminary at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

"Harry and Thomas ran great races in tough conditions with the humidity," UW head coach Bryan Berryhill said. "They went out there and ran the race they needed to. They ran smart and put themselves in good positions, which is what they need to do tomorrow as well."

Fisher ran 1:49.51 for the ninth-fastest time in Thursday's first round and advances to the quarterfinals for a second-straight season, while Atkinson crossed the finish line in 1:49.92 for 14th. Fisher was third in his heat and Atkinson was second to automatically advance. Freshman Ricky Faure entered the meet with the sixth-fastest time in the event, but failed to advance after running 1:52.36.

Senior Erin Kirby and sophomore Kerry White were less than a second away from advancing in their races. Kirby ran 1:00.49 in the 400-meter hurdles for 27th, while White was 25th in the 800 meters in 2:10.08. Seniors Paul Thomas, Shreese Daniels and Holly Page also concluded impressive careers on Thursday. Daniels was 46th in the hammer with a throw of 167-1 and Thomas was 45th in the discus after fouling on all three attempts in an event that was delayed twice due to lightning. Page was 27th in the 10,000 meters at 36:07.33.

Eight Wyoming student-athletes compete on Friday. Junior Tyler Anderson throws the hammer at 1 p.m. MT, followed by sophomore Jordan Charles and senior Colin Herold in the 110-meter hurdles at 4:30 p.m. Fisher and Atkinson's quarterfinal race starts at 6:15 p.m. Sophomore Audra DeStefano runs the women's steeplechase at 7:50 p.m., while senior Garrett Zans and junior Amos Bowen run the men's race at 8:30 p.m.
