LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The indoor regular season is nearly over for the University of Wyoming track and field team, but there's still one more meet to go.
What's coming up
Wyoming will host the Robert Shine Invitational on Friday in the War Memorial Fieldhouse. Field events like the weight throw, high jump and long jump will begin at 5:30 p.m., and track events start at 7:15 p.m. with the 1-mile run.
Who's going to be there
Wyoming will welcome fellow Mountain West Conference members Air Force and Colorado State to the meet.
Where they rank
Four of Wyoming's athletes are ranked among the top-50 athletes in the nation. For the men, Lenyn Leonce is 42nd in the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 5 ½ inches, while Jeremiah James has the nation's 16th-best triple jump mark at 51-8 ¼. The women's team has two as well, with Afiya Walker in the 400-meter dash. She is 19th with a time of 53.75 seconds. Ashley Hutchinson is ranked in the weight throw with a toss of 61-11 ¾, good for 37th.
Why it's important
Wyoming will travel to the MWC Indoor Track Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on Feb. 24-26. The Shine Invitational is the last chance UW track athletes will have to run on their home track during the indoor track season.
"We hope that some of our field event kids can make some improvements in their performances, and we hope our kids don't get hurt," Wyoming coach Don Yentes said.
