LARAMIE, Wyo. -
In the final tune-up before the 2010 indoor Mountain West Conference Championships, the University of Wyoming track and field teams will welcome the Air Force Academy and a few Colorado State participants to the War Memorial Fieldhouse on Friday, Feb. 19, to compete in the Robert Shine Invitational beginning at 4:30 p.m. with the field events and 7:30 kicking off the 400-meter dash and track events.
"We are trying to get two things out of this meet," said head coach Don Yentes. "First, we want to sharpen a few people up heading into the conference meet, and second, we don't want to get anyone hurt. The hay is already in the barn, meaning we have put all the work in and we just don't want to waste it by getting hurt."
The meet will be run very similar to the Wyoming Power Meet earlier this year, with the track events consisting of mostly the sprints and short distances. The Cowboys and Cowgirls have only had one member who has provisionally qualified in 2010. Junior Jeremiah James has qualified in the triple jump and long jump and currently owns the 13th and 22nd best jumps in the nation respectively.
As for the women, senior Jennifer Schmitz will be competing in the 55-meter hurdles where she ranks sixth in the conference in the 60-meter hurdles. She currently owns the fifth-fastest time in Cowgirl history with a time of 8.68.
