COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wyoming Cowboy junior thrower Joe Plante was selected Tuesday as the Mountain West Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Co-Athlete of the Week for his performance in his most recent event.
It's Plante's first honor of the season and second of his career. He shared the honor with Cale Simmons of Air Force.
Plante, from Maynard, Minn., won the men's weight throw title at the Robert Shine Invitational in Laramie, Wyo., on Feb. 18. Plante set a new personal-best in the event, recording a mark of 63 feet,6 inches (19.35m). His performance ranks second in the Mountain West and 48th in the country this season. He did that despite having an appendectomy performed just one month ago.
"To set a personal record is impressive (after the appendectomy)," UW throws coach Paul Barrett said. "He is starting to come on now."
San Diego State freshman Shanae Roach was named the MWC Women's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week.
