COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU's Trent Powell and Shauna Smith of the University of Wyoming have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.
WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Shauna Smith - Wyoming
Senior Sprints/Hurdles Sheridan, Wyoming
Smith won two individual titles at last week's Cougar Invitational, winning the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, while also being a part of the Cowgirls' winning 4x100 meter relay team. Smith posted a time of 57.39 in the 400-meter hurdles, which is currently first in the nation and fourth all-time in the MWC (Smith holds the conference record in the event with a time of 55.54). Her time of 13.59 in the 100-meter hurdles also ranks 15th in the nation. Both hurdle times, as well as her team's relay time of 45.63, are all NCAA regional-qualifying times.
MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Trent Powell - BYU
Senior Pole Vault Mesa, Ariz.
Powell won the pole vault at the Cougar Invitational April 1, with a mark of 18'-0.50", which currently ranks first in the nation and second all-time in the MWC. A personal-best mark for Powell, the height also ranks fourth all-time at BYU.
