Wyoming's Kyle Herl Earns Weekly MWC Honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wyoming's Kyle Herl, New Mexico's Derek Mackel and Shayla Balentine of San Diego State have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Co-Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.


Kyle Herl - Wyoming

Senior • Throws • Hays, Kan.

Herl won the hammer throw at the Colorado Invite hosted by the University of Colorado with a personal-best heave of 215'-7". That mark currently ranks seventh in the nation and is fourth all-time in the MWC. Herl's throw was a personal best by more than 11 feet. He also placed third and set a personal record in the shot put with a mark of 54'-6".

Derek Mackel - New Mexico

Junior • Pole Vault • Albuquerque, N.M.

Mackel placed third in the pole vault at the Texas Relays last weekend with a personal-record mark of 17'-8.50". The vault is the third-best collegiate mark this season and is also the second-best mark in Lobo program history behind Simon Arkell's 1991 mark of 18'-2". It was a personal-best outdoor vault by almost eight inches and ranks fifth all-time in MWC history. The meet featured four of the nation's top-10 ranked pole vaulters.


Shayla Balentine - San Diego State University

Senior • Pole Vault • Los Osos, Calif.

Balentine won the pole vault at the Azusa Pacific (Calif.) Meet of Champions last weekend with a Mountain West Conference and San Diego State school record mark of 14'-0.50". The height is currently the top collegiate mark in the nation, the second-best outdoor mark posted in the United States and fourth-best vault in the world this season.
