Wyoming senior Robin Lyons and Colorado State senior Casey Malone were named McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for their performances last weekend.
Lyons, a senior from Panoka, Alberta, Canada, earned first place in the discus by almost eight feet at the Drake Relays this past weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. With a throw of 179' 5", she broke her own school record and improved on her conference-best mark. In the hammer throw, Lyons also set a new conference-best and broke her own school record with a mark of 206' 4". She finished second in the event.
Malone, a native of Arvada, Colo., earned first place in the discus at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo., last weekend. He finished in first by more than 15 feet with a mark of 211' 6". It is the second-longest throw in the nation this season and is a new school record. The mark also breaks a long-standing record for the state of Colorado set by Art Burns (University of Colorado) in 1977 with a throw of 209' 7". This is the second time Malone has earned the Conference Athlete of the Week honor this outdoor season.
