LARAMIE, Wyo. - Wyoming sophomore Paul Thomas was named the Mountain West Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week following his performance last Friday at the Cowpoke Open .
The Nine Mile, Wash., native threw the discus a personal-best 189'-10" for third place, beating his former best of 180'-3" by nearly 10 feet. The distance is ranked first in the league, beating teammate Joe Plante's second-place mark by three feet in the conference standings, and also ranks 20th in the NCAA standings for the event. The mark ranks third-best on the all-time Wyoming list for the event as he moved past Jeff Honey's 188'-11" from the 1997 season.
"Paul has worked very hard to earn this honor," said Wyoming associate head coach Paul Barrett. "He has moved into an elite level nationally in the discus and is peaking at the right time. His confidence is where it should be as we compete at the MW Championships this week."
The honor is the first of Thomas' Wyoming career. Colorado State's Kiah Hicks was named the MW Women's Athlete of the Week for her discus throws at the Cowpoke Open.
