LARAMIE, Wyo. - Having gained confidence and momentum after Friday's Cowpoke Open, the Wyoming track and field teams head to the Mountain West Outdoor Championships May 8-11 at UNLV's Partridge Stadium in Las Vegas.
Jenna Mann and Sabina Sandberg open the meet with the combined events Wednesday and Thursday while the rest of the team competes Friday and Saturday in open competition. The first four multi-events begin Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. MT, while the final three are Thursday with a start time of noon.
"I thought the team competed great over the weekend," said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. "For how short of a meet it was we got a lot done. Now we just have to go out and battle. We won't worry about who comes out on top, but just go fight and compete as a team and get as many points as we can. Like the indoor season, we want to improve from last year's point totals and take a step forward. At the end of the day, we just need to go out and compete."
Friday's field events begin at 11 a.m, while the track events begin at 9 a.m. Completing the meet Saturday, the field events begin at 10 a.m. with the track events slated for a 9 a.m. start. The awards ceremony will take place Saturday at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Several Wyoming athletes lead the league in their respective events or are near the top. To earn all-conference honors following the meet, an athlete must finish in the top three of his/her event.
Henry Ferreira is the favorite to win the javelin, while Paul Thomas and Joe Plante lead the conference in the discus throw. Plante and Mark Sparks are also expected to finish on top in the hammer throw. Lenyn Leonce and Stephen Michel are ranked third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump, while Brandon Douglass and Colin Herold hold respective second- and third-best marks in conference in the 110-meter hurdles.
On the women's side, senior Mollie Dahl leads the shot put field, while Jenna Mann is ranked third in the 100-meter hurdles from her 13.68 achieved at the Jack Christiansen Invitational. Taylor Gardner is presently third in the league in the 400-meter hurdles following last weekend's performance at the Cowpoke Open.
