Wyoming's track and field teams will compete this week at the 2004Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 12-15, in Las Vegas,Nev.
UNLV will host the Championships at Myron PartridgeStadium and Sheila Tarr Smith Field in LasVegas. This will mark the first time in conferencehistory that the event will be held atMyron Partridge Stadium. Grandstands, with seating for up to 1,000athletes and spectators, line the west edge of the track.Action begins on Wednesday, May 12th with decathlon andheptathlon competition. At the 2003 MWC Outdoor Championships the Cowgirls placed fourth, while the Cowboys placed fifth. UW also had two individual champions (Howe - men's triple jump, Fox - women's 400m dash).
Wyoming junior Jessica Fox (Burns, Wyo.) is the defending MWC outdoor champion in the women's 400m dash. Fox set a new Mountain West Conference all-time record in 2003 with a time of 51.92. The previous record was 52.16 by Michele Davis, UNLV, in 2002.
To date, UW has now broken 74 school and conference records in the last four seasons.
Nine UW track and field athletes have qualified for the NCAAMidwest Regional meet, which serves as the qualifying meet for the 2004NCAA Outdoor Championships.
