The United States Track CoachesAssociation (USTCA) has awarded the University of Wyoming women's indoortrack team and UW long jumper Mervin Swaby with USTCA All-AcademicHonors for their accomplishments in the classroom as student-athletes.
The Cowgirls were awarded All-Academic Team honors by meeting thecriteria which required the team to have a cumulative grade pointaverage of 3.10 (on a 4.0 scale) with a minimum of 14 athletes on theteam. The 25 member Cowgirl squad had a cumulative team GPA of 3.173.
"We have a tremendous group of young ladies on our team who are veryserious about getting a degree," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "I'mvery excited about the team getting this award, it reflects well uponour program."
Wyoming junior long jumper Mervin Swaby was awarded individualAll-Academic Team honors for not only excelling in the classroom but byalso succeeding on the track. In order to earn this award from theUSTCA, Swaby had to both have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale)and compete at the NCAA Track and Field Championships. Swaby, anaccounting major with a 3.278 GPA, competed at the 2001 NCAA IndoorTrack and Field Championships in the long jump where he finished 15th.
"Mervin's award is extra special because not only did he have to meetacademic requirements but he also had to compete at nationals. He is anexceptional student who works very hard at everything he does. He isone of only a few to receive this individual distinction," Yentes said.
