LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Five University of Wyoming track and field student-athletes have been named to the All-Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field team for 2011. The All-MW selections, which were announced Monday, are awarded to the top three finishers in each event at the conference meet.
The honor comes on the heels of the MWC Outdoor Track Championships, which concluded Saturday in Fort Collins, Colo. The Cowgirls scored 56 points to finish eighth out of nine teams.
Four individuals and one relay team received the honor for stellar performances at the conference meet.
Erin Kirby became just the second freshman in conference history to win the 400-meter hurdles when she outraced BYU's Alyssa Christensen for the crown. Running the event for the first time collegiately, Kirby's time of 59.39 seconds was the second-fastest time in school history.
Kirby's teammate, Long, was third in the same event with a lifetime-best mark of 59.90 seconds.
Afiya Walker completed her sweep of both the indoor and outdoor 400-meter titles over the weekend, winning the event with a time of 53.65 seconds. This is Walker's second-straight All-MWC Team nod.
Candace Wollert finished third overall in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:08.30, a lifetime-best and No. 2 time in school history.
The relay team of Kirby, Lindsey Simmons, Wollert and Walker ran to a time of 3:39.69, good for second place overall. That time put the team fifth on UW's all-time top-10 list.
