Fifteen University of Wyoming track and field student-athletes have qualified to compete in the NCAA West Preliminary on May 28-30 in Austin, Texas, the governing body announced Thursday. The 10 Cowboy and five Cowgirl contenders tie the program's highest total ever, as Wyoming sent the same number last season.

To reach the NCAA's East or West Preliminary meet, an athlete must be ranked in the region's top 48 of his/her event. From there, the top 12 finishers in each event at the two regional meets will receive an invitation to the NCAA Championships on June 10-13 in Eugene, Ore.

Freshman Ricky Faure is the top Cowboy qualifier, sitting sixth in the West in the 800 meters with a time of 1:47.59. He'll be joined in the event by graduate students Harry Fisher and Thomas Atkinson. Fisher is 16th at 1:48.34 for his second-straight trip to the regional meet, while Atkinson qualified for the first time in 1:49.11 for 27th. Seniors Garrett Zans and Paul Thomas will compete in their fourth regional meet in the steeplechase and hammer, respectively. Zans is 38th in 8:57.72, while Thomas is 38th as well at 178-7. Junior Amos Bowen will join Zans in the steeplechase, ranking 35th at 8:56.57. Fellow junior Tyler Anderson threw 198-4 in the hammer to rank 35th and junior Scott Carter is 43rd in the triple jump at 49-3 3/4. Sophomore Jordan Charles and senior Colin Herold both made it in the 110-meter hurdles. Charles is 31st in 14.17, while Herold is 46th at 14.32. Bowen, Anderson, Carter, Charles and Herold are all making their second appearance at the regional meet.

The top-ranked Cowgirl is senior Holly Page at 15th in the 10,000 meters at 33:49.66. Sophomore Audra DeStefano is one place higher in the steeplechase with a time of 10:18.51, while senior Erin Kirby is 17th in the 400-meter hurdles at 58.66. Page and DeStefano are running in the regional meet for a second time, while Kirby's in her third. Senior Shreese Daniels will compete in the meet for a fourth time, as she qualified 30th in the hammer with a throw of 195-8. Sophomore Kerry White will make her first trip to the regional after running 2:08.53 in the 800 meters for 31st.

Twelve of Wyoming's 15 qualifiers have competed at the West regional before, but just two student-athletes have advanced past the preliminary round in the five years of the current qualifying system. Jeremiah James made the NCAA Championships in the triple jump in 2010 and Mason Finley in the discus last season. Fisher missed advancing in the 800 meters at last year's regional meet by one tenth of a second, as he finished 15th in the event.
