LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Action will begin Thursday for 14 University of Wyoming track student-athletes who are set to compete in the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas. Hosted by the University of Texas, the three-day event runs through Saturday and will determine who earns a spot in the NCAA Championships.
The Cowboys who earned bids to the West Preliminary include sophomore Garrett Zans (3,000-meter steeplechase); senior Taylor Kelting (5,000-meter run); senior Greg Miller (10,000-meter run); senior Nick Ekel (10,000-meter run); junior Lenyn Leonce (long jump); senior Jeremiah James (triple jump); junior Joe Plante (discus); freshman Paul Thomas (discus) and junior Henry Ferreira in the javelin throw.
Qualifiers for the Cowgirls were sophomore Candace Wollert (800-meter run); sophomore Erin Kirby (400-meter hurdles); junior Mollie Dahl (shot put); freshman Shreese Daniels (shot put) and senior Ashley Hutchinson in the hammer throw.
What's at stake
The top 12 finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 6-9.
Events begin Thursday with the men's javelin at 10 a.m., while the men's 400-meter hurdles begin at 3:30 p.m. on the track. On Friday, it will be the women's discus at 10 a.m. and the men's 110-meter hurdles at 4 p.m. and on Saturday, action begins at 10 a.m. with the men's discus and the men's 4-by-100-meter relay at 5 p.m. All times listed are Mountain.
