Next Up For Wyoming: The Cowboys and Cowgirls will now wait to seewhich Wyoming athletes will be competing at the NCAA Championships onMay 29-June 2. Senior Jason Gervais has automatically qualified in thediscus while five other Wyoming athletes have provisionally qualified inthier individual events. The qualifiers will be officially announced oneither Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
Cowgirls 4th, Cowboys 5th at MWC Championships: Wyoming had fourindividual champions at the Mountain West Conference Championships thispast weekend. On Friday senior Jason Gervais won the discus andfreshman Andrea Batt won the javelin. On Saturday senior Jason Hammondwon the hammer and sophomore Seth Billy won the 400-meter hurdlestitle. Gervais won the discus with a throw of 196-2 on his finalattempt. His winning mark was nearly ten feet further than that of thesecond-place finisher. Batt set a new conference and school record witha throw of 168-8 in the javelin. Hammond won the hammer with a throw of214-2. Wyoming finished 1-2-3 in the hammer with Derek Woodske secondand Gervais third. Billy turned in a time of 51.31 in the 400-meterhurdles, which was a season-best time. As a team the women finished infourth-place with 70 points. The men finished fifth with 90 points.The Cowboys were just one point out of fourth-place behind New Mexico,which had 91 points. In the end Wyoming finished with 13 All-Conferenceperformers. BYU won team titles on both the men's and women's sides.
Cowgirl Team/Swaby Awarded Academic Honors:The United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) has awarded theUniversity of Wyoming women's indoor track team and UW long jumperMervin Swaby with USTCA All-Academic Honors for their accomplishments inthe classroom as student-athletes. The Cowgirls were awardedAll-Academic Team honors by meeting the criteria which required the teamto have a cumulative grade point average of 3.10 (on a 4.0 scale) with aminimum of 14 athletes on the team. The 25 member Cowgirl squad had acumulative team GPA of 3.173. Wyoming junior long jumper Mervin Swabywas awarded individual All-Academic Team honors for not only excellingin the classroom but by also succeeding on the track. In order to earnthis award from the USTCA, Swaby had to both have a cumulative GPA of3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) and compete at the NCAA Track and FieldChampionships. Swaby, an accounting major with a 3.278 GPA, competed atthe 2001 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the long jumpwhere he finished 15th.
Senior Gervais Automatically Qualifies for NCAA's: Senior Jason Gervaisautomatically qualified for the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track and FieldChampionships in the discus after a qualifying toss of 198-3 at thePomona-Pitzer Invite on April 20. He improved upon his season bestthrow the next day with a toss of 201-9 at the Mt. Sac Relays. Gervaiscompeted in the discus at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Five UW Athletes Provisionally Qualified for Nationals:Five Wyoming athletes have provisionally qualified for the 2001 NCAAChampionships. Those athletes are freshman Andrea Batt (javelin),senior Joe Hall (10,000-meter run), senior Jason Hammond (hammer),junior Julie Thomas (hammer) and senior Derek Woodske (hammer).Qualifiers will be announced on either Wednesday or Thursday.
