Track Athletes Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Following a season of excellence both on the track and in school, Wyoming seniors Brandon Douglass and Stephen Michel were honored as Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 7 recipients Thursday afternoon.

"I'm pleased with the leadership Brandon and Stephen have provided to the team throughout their careers," said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. "They set a tremendous example of what it means to work hard both in academics and athletics and they take both very seriously. It has been an honor to work with them this past year."

Douglass, a Casper, Wyo. native with a 3.97 GPA as a physiology major, qualified for last week's NCAA West Preliminary where he finished 22nd in the 110-meter hurdles quarterfinals after placing 13th in the preliminary round. This season he earned All-MW honors in the 110-meter hurdles with his second-place finish at the league's outdoor meet and achieved All-MW accolades in the 60-meter hurdles during the indoor season.

Throughout his indoor seasons, he owns UW's No. 1 all-time best mark in the 60-meter hurdles, a 7.90, from the 2013 league meet and also has Wyoming's No. 4 pole vault (16'-0.75") and No. 2 heptathlon (5,098). From his four outdoor seasons, Douglass owns the No. 4 UW mark in the 110-meter hurdles (13.97), No. 9 pole vault (15'-1") and No. 8 decathlon (6,620).

Michel, a Laramie, Wyo. native, owns a 3.93 GPA studying molecular biology. In 2013, he earned All-MW honors in the long jump at the league meet with his third-place distance of 23'-10.75" and placed fifth in the triple jump and eighth in the 100-meter dash. He placed second in the long jump at the Cowpoke Open and ninth in the 100-meter dash at the Jack Christiansen Invite, where he also placed second in the long jump at 23'-9.50."

He owns multiple Wyoming Top 10 marks for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. For indoor seasons, he achieved UW's No. 3 60-meter dash (6.78), No. 10 long jump (24'-3.50") and No. 7 triple jump (50'-3.25"). From his outdoor seasons, Michel has Wyoming's No. 7 100-meter dash (10.59), No. 8 200-meter dash (21.71), No. 9 long jump (24'-2.25") and No. 10 triple jump (48'-3.25").

Other District 7 honorees were Matt Carey (Rice), Blake Niccum (Baylor), Bjorn Barrefors (Nebraska), Taylor Jackson (Baylor), Matthew Bell (Air Force), Gabriel Aragon (New Mexico), Jeremy Drenckhahn (Air Force) and Thomas Trujillo (New Mexico).
